This spring, we are excited to introduce screenings of international films with English subtitles every so often. We welcome all those who may not feel at home in the Dutch language but still crave the allure of international arthouse films. Dive into a cinematic world where English isn't the only language spoken; savor the flavors of for example French, Portuguese, Japanese or Iranian cinema.
Our goal is to make high-quality cinema accessible to a wider audience, breaking down language barriers along the way. So join us, and let the magic of global cinema captivate you!
About the film
In 1935, a young teacher named Antoni Benaiges (Enric Auquer) arrives in a remote village in the Spanish province of Burgos. His classroom is filled with boys and girls between the ages of six and twelve, children who have only ever known education as something rigid and oppressive. But Benaiges brings something different. With him, he carries a printing press, and he invites his students to write — not just lessons, but their dreams, their hopes, their visions of the future. One day, he makes them an extraordinary promise: that he will take them to see the sea a vast, mysterious world none of them has ever known.
'The Teacher Who Promised the Sea' is a powerful historical drama inspired by the true story of Antoni Benaiges (1903–1936), based on the novel 'El maestro que prometió el mar' by Francesc Escribano. Escribano, who also serves as a producer of the film, joins forces with director Patricia Font to deliver a deeply affecting portrait of a man who believed in the power of imagination, the dignity of children, and the future that education could unlock.
